Snow Water Equivalent Retrieval Using Delta-k Insar Repeat Pass Processing of Envisat Asar Data

چکیده
Estimation of total snow mass by means of SAR interferometry is problematic, due to high sensitivity of the interferometric phase to the snow water equivalent, leading to the phase unwrapping problem. In this paper, we pursue a recently proposed technique, delta-k interferometric phase estimation, that avoids phase wrapping by lowering the sensitivity of the interferometric phase to the snow water equivalent. The technique is applied to ENVISAT ASAR data from a test site containing a catchment for a hydropower plant. Corner reflectors are deployed in the area as zero snow phase reference points.

Snow Mass Retrieval by Means of Sar Interferometry
The feasibility for retrieving the mass of snow on ground (the snow water equivalent, SWE) by means of repeat-pass SAR interferometry has been investigated. Because the SAR signal of ground covered by dry snow is dominated by backscatter from the snow/ground interface, the differential phase shift due to propagation in the snow can be directly related to SWE. The factors of relevance for cohere...

This study presents a new method to analyse some parameters of snow in alpine region: density, wetness. Here are developed the methodology and first results obtained from a set of ASAR-ENVISAT images registered during 2004 spring period over an experimental river basin located in the French Alps (N 45° 05’/ E 6° 10’). For ENVISAT/ASAR data, a topographic processing is done using a Digital Eleva...
متن کاملReduction of Atmospheric Water Vapour Effects on Envisat Asar Interferograms Using Meris near Ir Measurements
Atmospheric water vapour effects represent a major limitation of repeat-pass Interferometric SAR (InSAR) techniques including InSAR time series approaches (e.g. permanent scatterers (PS) and small baseline subset (SBAS)). In this paper, it is demonstrated that atmospheric water vapour effects greater than 4 cm can be observed even in desert regions (e.g. Southern California) and the use of MERI...
متن کاملSnow Cover Monitoring Using Multi-temporal Envisat/asar Data
ABSTRACT A method has been developed to apply multi-temporal Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ENVISAT/ASAR, C-Band) images to snow cover monitoring and mapping in mountainous areas. A multi-temporal dataset that includes sequences of ascending and descending ASAR wide swath and beam mode IS2 scenes acquired over Switzerland was investigated. The images were geometrically corrected to remove r...

A near-real time GMES-relevant monitoring system for semi-operational retrieval of snow covered area for hydrological and climatological applications has been developed in the Envisnow EC EESD FP 5 project. The system, using ENVISAT ASAR wide swath data from ESA AOE 785 and from the Kongsberg satellite station, geocodes and classifies Envisat ASAR data automatically, and produces SCA maps with ...
